What’s worse than pulling up to your local surf spot and there’s a line out the lot. You have no choice, so you wait for what seems like ages until finally you come across an empty spot that’s at least a 20 min walk from the waves. By this time, your pre-surf psych is almost gone and you curse yourself because you know tomorrow will be the same routine. The solution, biking! If biking to your local break is a possibility, it’s time to slap a surf rack on that hunk of metal we call transportation and make that your new means of getting to surf. Cars are out and bikes and e-bikes are in.
As surfing becomes a more popular sport, the International Surfing Association (ISA) reported 35 million surfers in 2020, crowded lineups and beach parking lots are the new norm. The best way to avoid time wasted in the car instead of in the waves is by riding your bike. A bike gets you a front-row spot at the beach without the hassle of finding parking or getting caught in traffic. If riding a manual bike is a bit out of reach, consider investing in an e-bike. The extra support provided by these battery-powered steeze machines get you to your destination in no time.
Bikes are quick and easy. Despite the obvious advantages to cars, like storing your surf stuff, fast arrival with minimal effort, and comfort, they aren’t as efficient as your basic bike. When you ride a bike, you’re already dressed in your wetsuit, your board is already unpacked and ready to go, and the only worry you have is avoiding the cars in the parking lot when getting to the beach. No more hassle over keys, we recommend getting a combination lock, and when you’re done you don’t have to worry about repacking your car with the added dangers of getting sand all over the interior, you simply just bike home.
It’s no doubt that your standard bike is way better for the environment than a car. It also turns out e-bikes are better as well. The more time you spend in your car, the more carbon emissions are released into the atmosphere. Check out Sea Trees for ways to offset your carbon emissions from driving and flying. When you bike you are spending less time driving, reducing traffic, which also increases emissions from your and other cars, and not to mention spending less money on gas. It’s a win, win, win.
For those looking to add a bit of cross-training to your usual surf workout routine, biking isn’t only great cardio, but it’s a great way to workout your lower body. If you’re worried about tiring yourself out pre-surf, e-bikes are a great way to still move your legs with added support and go.
Aside from being one of JOB’s favorite forms of transportation, Murf Electric Bikes were created by surfers for surfers. The San Clemente based company noticed that the process of getting to their beloved surf spot was almost more exercise for their patience than their bodies. They decided to make a fast, reliable, and good-looking electric beach cruiser to take them where they need to go. They have a wide variety of electric beach cruisers for any surfer and any beach, and all the necessary accessories to make your trip to the beach as easy as possible. Think surf racks, cup holders, phone holders, and baskets.
Now that you know why you should ride your bike to surf, it’s time to hit the waves. Remember to check out the Jamie O’Brien Surf App here for anytime, anywhere surf coaching.
