Travel expands our perspectives by introducing us to new cultures, and in particular, surf travel brings us across the globe to incredible waves and ocean communities. Unfortunately, travel has a sizable environmental impact, so next time you plan to pack up and journey to a new surf destination, follow these 7 easy steps to help reduce your impact.

1.Offset Your Carbon Footprint

Whether you are traveling by plane, car, boat, or train, most modes of transportation emit carbon into our atmosphere. Luckily, many non-profit organizations exist to help us, everyday travelers, mitigate our impacts through carbon offset programs. One of our favorites is Sustainable Surf. They focus on habitat restoration and community support by planting carbon-sequestering Mangrove trees in coastal ecosystems.

2. Only Pack what's Necessary

An easy way to reduce your carbon footprint while traveling is to pack light. More weight translates to more energy needed to get to your destination, which in turn produces higher CO2 emissions. Though it’s hard for surf trips, given the extra equipment, try to cut back wherever possible and consider items that you can rent once you arrive.

3. Educate Yourself

Research before your trip. Learn something about the local culture, history, and be aware of the animals that may be impacted by your travel to this area. Not only will this help you be a respectful guest, but it will also enrich your experience.

4. Research Where You Stay

Though many hotels are working hard to be as sustainable as possible, many are not. Do a little bit of research before you book where you’ll be crashing. Another suggestion is to stay in an Airbnb or homestay situation. Research done by the Cleantech Group has shown guests use significantly less energy when staying in home rentals like Airbnb in comparison to hotels.

5. Eat and Shop Local

Support your local economy. The emission costs of shipping items to big-name grocery stores or markets all have an impact. Give back to the community where you’re staying and try to purchase from local sourcing markets.

6. Eco-Friendly Products

From eco-friendly swimsuits and reef-safe sunscreen to a reusable water bottle and cosmetic containers, make sure the products you bring are eco-conscious. A reusable water bottle can help cut down on extra plastic throughout your travels, and eco-friendly swimsuits are a great way to be fashionable without the impacts of fast fashion. Reef-safe sunscreen is especially important when heading to surf spots with sensitive coral ecosystems.

 7. Take Care of Your Destination

If you’ve made it this far in this article, you’re on the right track. Follow these guidelines to be respectful and conscious while traveling to your surf destination. If you want to go above and beyond, consider scheduling a time to volunteer to support and learn about the local community.
