The NorCal Bay Area is known for its heavier, cold surf at breaks like Ocean Beach, Steamers Lane... and even Mavericks, but among these expert level waves are plenty of friendly breaks for beginner surfers. From the North Bay to Santa Cruz, here is a guide to 5 of the best waves for beginners in the bay area California.
North of San Francisco and just past Stinson Beach lies the sleepy little town of Bolinas. The weather is cool, foggy, and the waves are typically on the smaller side. The main breaks, depending on the tides and swell, are the jetty (to the left) and the patch (to the right). There will be boarders of all types; surfing, SUPing, foiling, canoeing, etc., and may get crowded on the infrequent sunny day or weekend. If you need to rent a board, stop at Live Water Surf Shop or Stinson Surf and Kayak on the way out.
Just south of San Francisco and home to the most scenic Taco Bell Cantina in the world... yes, in the world, is a mile-long stretch of beach with perfect waves for newer surfers. Most days are easy and small on the inside. However, when a bigger swell comes in, a proper pounding can be in store. The crowd is typically beginner to intermediate level and welcoming. Post surf sesh it is highly recommended to grab a Taco Bell Supreme Crunch Wrap, Margarita, and enjoy an iconic meal with a beautiful view.
Close to the legendary surf break Mavericks and located right off Highway 1, Princeton Jetty has a perfect beginner beach break. The best waves are on the inside of the jetty, however, when it's crowded with local kids, there are also ridable waves on the outside. The friendly and welcoming vibe creates an inclusive environment for anyone looking to learn. Before or after a surf sesh drive up or down Highway 1 to see the gorgeous coastline.
Cowells is probably the best beach to learn to surf. The energy in the water is partially blocked by the lighthouse creating easy, mellow, super friendly waves. It's one of the more crowded beaches in Santa Cruz, but the vibe remains welcoming as the majority are beginners. If you want to watch some good surfing, check out Steamer Lane right next to the lighthouse and about a 10 min walk from Cowells.
One of the more well-known surf spots in NorCal, Pleasure Point, has a reputation for being one of the best breaks for all kinds of boarders. It’s popular and usually crowded, however, if you can swing a mid-week sesh on a smaller day, there will be waves to share. Nearby board rental shops are plentiful, and Pleasure Point Pizza is a classic local spot to grab some grub post-surf. It’s recommended to watch Chasing Mavericks to see some great footage and background on the history of this break.
